In September, Apple revealed the Apple Watch Ultra, a high end version of the Apple Watch that’s aimed at sports enthusiasts and athletes. According to Apple, the smartwatch was built for endurance, exploration, and adventure. For example, with a MIL-STD-810H certificate, a military-grade durability rating used for many “rugged” tech products, the Apple Watch Ultra can handle extreme conditions of altitude, temperature, rain, physical shock, vibration, and more. For those who like water sports, the Ultra also won’t let you down.
Is Apple Watch waterproof?
You Apple Watch Ultra is water-resistant, not waterproof. It is certified to WR100 and EN 13319, meaning 100m water resistant and 40m swimproof/diving respectively. So activities that’s not recommended for the standard Apple Watch models like swimming, showering, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and recreational scuba diving all well suit the Ultra.
If you want to add an extra layer of protection, have your Watch turn on Water Lock automatically when it’s submerged to a depth of 10cm or lower. When you finish, press and hold the digital crown to unlock the screen and clear any water from your Apple Watch. A series of tones plays to clear any water that remains in the speaker.
Use Oceanic + app on your Apple Watch Ultra
Apple is also announcing the Oceanic+ app for Watch Ultra which makes it a diving computer. When you are descending or ascending too quickly, the app will show you a warning. Before getting back to the surface, it will show an estimated time. Besides these, there’re also compass heading during a dive, as well as a planner that takes tide, temperature, visibility, and currents into account before going on a dive.
The Oceanic+ app requires the Watch Ultra running WatchOS 9.1 and the paired iPhone at least iPhone 8 on iOS 16.1. While limited free version is now available, you can fully unlock the app for $5/day, $10/month, or $80/year.
