Launched alongside the iPhone 14 at Apple’s Far Out event, the AirPods Pro 2 are an upgrade over the first-generation AirPods that were launched in 2019. The earbuds pack Apple’s latest H2 chip for improved connectivity, enhanced noise cancellation capabilities, a new inward-facing microphone for better audio quality in calls, and a longer-lasting battery. However, are the AirPods Pro 2 waterproof? Many earbuds have some degree of water-resistance, but does it apply to the Pro 2 as well?

Well, the answer is yes and no. Both the AirPods Pro 2 and the charging case come with an IPX4 rating, but it should be noted that they are IPX4 water-resistant, not waterproof. Every year, lots of devices will get the water-resistance ratings from the International Electrotechnical Commision (IEC), which will offer an IP (Ingress Protection) rating to show how well they can withstand dust and water, which is represented on the IP (Ingress Protection). Usually, “IP” is followed by two numbers The first digit refers to small particle resistance, while the second – to resistance to liquids.
Therefore, IPX4 of AirPods Pro 2 means that can withstand splashes of water from all directions for up to 10 minutes. That is to say, there’s no need to worry about damage from sweat and the occasional splash of water, like when you plan to work out with the earbuds.

Can you take the AirPods Pro 2 while swimming? Absolutely not. To do that you may have to look for IPX8 or higher rated devices, which can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes without damage. To prevent your AirPods Pro 2, you need to avoid placing your AirPods under running water, wearing them in a sauna or steam room, or exposing them to high-velocity water, such as while water skiing. If they are accidentally exposed to water, wipe them clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth in the first time. Then let them completely dry before using or charging. If your AirPods are exposed to any of these, wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water. After that, follow the same steps as above.
In a word, an IPX4 water and sweat-resistance rating gives you peace of mind that your AirPods Pro 2 won’t get water-damaged under normal use. But if you want to give them the best protection, it’s worthwhile to invest in a waterproof case.
