A few days ago,Apple finally released battery cases for iPhone XS/Max/XR with Qi charging support. Cost $129,the cases increase the battery life of latest iPhone to about 21 hours of internet browsing time. According to Apple, the Smart Battery cases are compatible with wireless charging pads, and can power an iPhone for up to 21 hours of internet use, increasing the battery life an iPhone can get on a single charge.
Apple introduced its battery cases along with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7, but until last week had declined to release new battery cases for the iPhone 8, iPhone X, and newer phones.
However,it seems like iPhone X owners are out of luck. Apple did not release an iPhone X battery case. Some cases are compatible with both the iPhone X and iPhone XS, but none of the cases released on last week list the iPhone X as a compatible device.
On the iPhone XS Smart Battery Case product page, Apple only indicates that the case is compatible with the XS, with no mention at all of the iPhone X. Rene Ritchie took to Twitter to share his results from trying the new Smart Battery Case with the iPhone X. The iPhone XS version of the case fits the iPhone X, but it does not actually function.
Particularly, they also support Qi charging. This is how Apple describes the iPhone XS case:
The Smart Battery Case is compatible with Qi-certified chargers. Consumers can charge the iPhone and battery case simultaneously for increased talk time up to 33 hours, Internet use up to 21 hours, and even longer audio and video playback. With the Smart Battery Case on, the intelligent battery status is displayed on the iPhone Lock screen and in Notification Center, so you know exactly how much charge you have left.
But if you have an iPhone X, Apple does not list the iPhone XS Smart Battery as backward compatible with the iPhone X. This is likely due to the camera bump on the iPhone XS being slightly taller than on the iPhone X. For previous generations, Apple never made Smart Battery cases for “Plus” iPhone, presumably because a major selling point for those devices was increased battery life that lasts all day.
Should you buy it?
Sure, if you value convenience and reliability over all else. we really like knowing that we won’t run out of battery and that it works with wireless chargers. It’s great if you’re going to get on a plane and don’t want to fumble around looking for your battery pack and a cable to make sure you have enough juice until you land.
In the end, If you want to grab an Apple Smart Battery Case for your iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, the case is great if you’re going to spend a day or two away from an outlet and could use the extra peace of mind.
