Rumor had it that Samsung Galaxy S9 would feature a brand new innovative screen coating and could be beyond just waterproof, is that turned out to be positive? What does IP68 mean? What’s the difference between IP67 and IP68?

First of all, you need to figure out what does IP mean.  IP stands for Ingress Protection, which indicates  how easily dust and water can intrude on the internals of your device, the first number refers to dust-resistant rating and second for water-resistant rating respectively. Samsung Galaxy S9 earns a 6 rating for completely protecting from dust, general dirt and sand. 8 stands for water-resistant certified for submersion in fresh water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes, while the IP 67 certified phones can only pass the test submersion in water of 1 meter for 30 meters. Thus, we can say Samsung Galaxy S9 is waterproof indeed.

Why Samsung Galaxy S9 is not beyond IP68 waterproof?

Theoretically, the top rating digit for waterproof is 9, which means the device is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions. How to achieve that? Normally, the device has to be hermetically sealed. Is it possible for Samsung Galaxy S9 to be like that? Quite difficult since S9 keeps the headphone jack and the charging port. It also depends on the material, technology and cost mainly. Hermetic parts cost more to build and test, it would not be revolutionary and very expensive to build a phone beyond waterproof. Additionally, IP68 waterproof Samsung Galaxy S9 is quite acceptable for customers, basically we would not use phones under water most times.

  1. The sensible option for working in wet conditions is the dry bag. I’ve worked in constant rain all day with a non-waterproof phone around my neck, and it worked perfectly well. The IP68 rating of the S9+ is great when you accidentally lose your phone overboard, and you need to go looking for it under water. For that, it’s worth the extra expense.
