How to Check Mouse DPI

When coming to choose a mouse, people like to talk about its DPI and polling rate. Especially for gamers, artists, and designers, for whom the mouse’s high precision and fast reaction time matter a lot. Since some people know little about DPI, I will have a brief introduction about it before I introduce how to check your mouse DPI.

What is Mouse DPI?

As a measurement of how sensitive a mouse is, DPI (dots per inch) is an index used to express the relation between the move distance of your cursor(pixel) and your mouse(inch), and it can be calculated as: DPI= the distance that the pointer moves/the distance that the mouse moves

The higher a mouse’s DPI is, the farther the cursor on your screen will move when you move the mouse a little. A mouse with a higher DPI setting detects and reacts to smaller movements. Attention you should pay to is that the DPI is not the higher the better. Generally, High DPI rates work well for users that have larger or high-resolution monitors, but they can make it difficult to accurately select small areas on the screen. Maybe that’s the reason why most of the mice on the market are featured with adjustable DPI which allows users to select their own DPI manually.

Additionally, DPI is different from the typical mouse sensitivity setting. DPI refers to a mouse’s hardware capabilities, while sensitivity is just a software setting. A very cheap mouse with low DPI can be cranked up the sensitivity and a high DPI mouse can also be paired with a low sensitivity setting. All the difference is shown on your screen while you move your mouse.

How to check Mouse DPI

It is usually the case that you can find your mouse’s DPI on the spec when your first buy your device. But more often than not you may find it not so exact. In this case, you can try DPI Analyzer, maybe a little complicated, but it really can tell you what your mouse’s DPI is currently at.

Of course if your mouse is not with a fixed DPI, you can check the Keyboard Center or the software that came with your product to determine your mouse’s current DPI setting. For instance, if you have windows 8, you can access through the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center change your DPI settings. For some other mice which have external buttons on the mice, you are allowed to select DPI manually.
