Is the Motorola Edge 40 Pro good at camera performance?

There is a recent camera test of the Motorola Edge 40 Pro including photo, video and zoom quality.

According to the results, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro performed well in most areas of the image quality test. When in a still shooting , subject exposure and white balance are sound in most tested conditions, especially in low-light and night shots. The camera plays its part with autofocus rapidly and accurately in bright light, and overall creates a great texture/noise trade-off. Nevertheless, testers observed some contrast issues in challenging high-contrast scenes, which can lead to clipping and tonal compression.

When it comes to video, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro ranks below the top phones in its class, often allowing users to make high-quality video clips in fairly static scenes. Video clips offer accurate exposure and white balance, and an acceptable level of detail, although there is some slight over-sharpening. In fairly static scenes, temporal noise is well controlled. Video stabilization doesn’t always work when you’re moving while recording, causing camera shake to be more noticeable than on best-in-class phones.

Testers found zoom to be the area with the most potential for improvement on the Motorola Edge 40 Pro. Its dedicated telephoto lens provides a 50mm-equivalent focal length, and in spite of some noticeable image noise, at a 2x zoom factor the results are pretty nice. However, when zoomed in to the equivalent of 70mm, there is a noticeable drop in image quality, and at focal lengths of 100mm or longer, images are hardly usable. The ultra-wide camera fares better, though, offering a 14mm wide field of view and overall pleasant image quality.

The Edge 40 Pro does well overall when we are making a still shooting. In testing, the phone’s main strength in photo mode is to deliver fairly natural white balance in a variety of conditions, including low light. Overall exposure is fairly accurate, but some inaccuracies and contrast issues occur in back-lit scenes and scenes with high contrast. The camera manages to maintain a good balance between image detail and noise reduction, leading to a wonderful level of detail. However, the tester observed some unwanted image artifacts, including color quantization and fusion artifacts. Autofocus is considerably accurate, but a bit slow in most situations.
