Apple finally unveiled AirTag after months of rumors and speculations. It is a real competitor of Tile, boasting not only the basic tracking ability but also premium features like Precision Finding and compatibility with all of Apple devices.
AirTag is actually based on the technology called UWB/ultra wideband. Though Bluetooth can also track things, UWB is able to track them from within five meters to 10 centimeters. So as long as your AirTag attached to your keys, bags or other items is nearby, your iPhone will lead you straight to it. You’ll see the distance to your AirTag and the direction to head in — all thanks to UWB technology. The Precision Finding will also take advantage of camera input, ARKit, accelerometer and gyroscope, making sure you find the AirTag via sound, haptic and visual feedback.
However, remember that AirTag is suitable for nearly all Apple devices, but Precision Finding is only limited to iPhone 11/iPhone 12 series.
Some people may be wondering if AirTag has a rechargeable battery. According to Apple, ” AirTag is designed for over a year’s worth of battery life with everyday use. The CR2032 battery is user-replaceable and widely available. Replacement batteries are sold separately. ” This figure is based on the testing results from Apple laboratory, and Apple claims that batery life may vary with usage, environmental conditions, replacement battery manufacturer, and many other factors.
To swap out the battery, simply press and twist on the back panel of the AirTag to pop it off. And your iPhone lets you know when itʼs time to pop in a new one.
Since AirTag doesn’t come with any other accessories in the box, you’ll need another product if you want to attach the AirTag to keys or other item you often lose track of. Apple have some handmade leather pieces on partnership with the lukury leather goods company Hermes, but you also have other less expensive and possibly more versatile options.
