Before the official debut of iPhone 12 line, the rumors said that Apple should change the game of water resistance of smartphone industry. Since iPhone 11 is already rated IP68 waterproof, how could Apple make it better on iPhone 12?
The datasheet says that iPhone 12 is rated IP68 as well, is it the same IP68 as iPhone 11? Don’t forget that Apple introduced its water ejection system on Apple Watch Series 2 debut, and the tech giant granted a published patent for a water ejection system for iPhone too. Therefore, we are quite curious that whether iPhone 12 and its siblings are beyond the IP 68 rated waterproof of iPhone 11 ?
Actually iPhone 12 is splash, water, and dust resistant to maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes, while iPhone 11 is only able to submerge up to 2 meters for 30 minutes and iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max can go deeper to 4 meters for 30 minutes. So iPhone 12 should have better waterproof rating than iPhone 11.
Can we go swimming with iPhone 12? The Apple Watch Series 2 and on have been what Apple calls swim-proof. But Apple does currently list it at up to 50 meters, no IP rating given. If iPhone 12 really installed the water eject system, I believe there’s no problem for swimming with it.
From the above video you see that even iPhone 11 Pro can survive underwater so I think iPhone 12 would be way better than that. However, the real waterproof data will be soon released after the underwater test and we will know how deep the iPhone 12 line could go.
Even thouth iPhone 12 is waterproof, there’s no need to add a waterproof case anymore, but it is necessary to learn that the Ceramic Shield is only applied to the display. If you accidentally drop your phone, the front side is more likely to stay safe but the back of the phone may get scratches or cracks. With an IP68 rating, you still would better protect the iPhone 12 and keep it away from any dangers as possible as you can.
