Sony just launched the first vlogging camera ZV-1, which reminds us of Sony Xperia 1 II, the Alpha-camera-based smartphone that gives more freedom of photography to consumers. Actually, what Xperia 1 II really amazes us are some features that disappear on many other competitors, including the expandable memory card and the 3.5mm headphone jack.
There is a SIM card/microSD card slot on the left side of the phone. You can easily extract the tray without using a SIM tool. The power button or fingerprint reader is on the right side. Right below it, there is a shutter button that enables you to soft press to acquire focus, then press all the way to capture an image. On the bottom is just a USB-C port, and the 3.5mm headphone port is housed on the top.
This audio port was removed on the Xperia XZ2 series, the Xperia XZ3, and the Xperia 1 and 5 phones. Sony said that they made the decision just because of “the priority we were placing on improving the design of the phone and the fact that wireless earphones were becoming more common.” And now, they bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack to “give people a smartphone that they will love.”Sony Mobile’s Uke Ikeda suggested that Sony felt the necessity of the port for entertainment-related content and playing games.
It is true the return of the headphone jack will bring people convenience again, especially when they need to charge and use headphones at the same time. For Sony, it makes sense that a 3.5mm audio port will connect more people with their own headphones.
Sony also did a great job on speakers. There are two front-facing speakers, one on the top and another on the bottom. With them, the music and video still sound great when you are not using headphones. Both speakers are quite loud, though they may get slightly distorted at maximum volume. Anyway, the audio experience Sony Xperia 1 II offers is quite good among many new flagships like Galaxy S20 and Pixel 4.
