Will iPhone 12 series support 5G?

Apple just unveiled the new iPhone SE 2020, despite the company has already shut down on limited capacity due to the prevailing of COVID-19. That may indicate that the iPhone 12 series are still on schedule. According to multiple leaks, the upcoming iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Max (possibly four models by some tipsters) would still be launched in September, or at least this fall. Compared with its predecessor iPhone 11 series, the new version will be more revolutionary rather than evolutionary. There will be 3D depth-sensing to the rear cameras and new screen sizes, what’s more, Apple will include a feature that its main rivals like Samsung have supported for a long time: 5G.

A report from Nikkei says that all iPhone 12 models will ship with 5G networking, which means you are able to enjoy faster downloads even on the standard iPhone 12. Having the ability to add 5G connection, why does Apple react so late? This makes sense considering the company usually isn’t the first on mobile trends, preferring instead to perfect an emerging technology before committing to it. A similar example is that Apple did nothing when the rival manufacturers were making phones with 3G and 4G LTE.

Another reason lies in a dispute between Apple and the leading 5G modem provider, Qualcomn. The two sides settled their litigation in April 2019, and then agreed to a multiyear 5G chip deal. Now, Apple is still working with Qualcomn, but it is reportedly getting support from Samsung for 5G networks as well. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Qualcomn has been centered on mmWave ( which delivers a faster speed but requires line of sight), while Samsung get concentrated on sub-6GHz. That is to say, thanks to the cooperation with these two manufacturers, Apple can cover different carriers using different technologies in 5G networks.

When will we get the first 5G iPhone?

As of today, 5G is typically 5-10 times faster than 4G. In the future, this figure may increase to even 100 times. In the UK, 5G reaches an average speed of 150-200Mbps, and a peak speed exceeding 1Gbps. That means we can download a full HD film in around 3 minutes, compared with over 15 minutes on 4G. In the US, the normal speed ranges from 600Mbps to 1Gbps, still very high for downloading. But when will we get the first 5G iPhone, exactly? Early in January this year, CNBC has reported that Apple will launch its first 5G iPhones in September, but a fast version may not come before next January. Based on Apple’s decision to in-source Antenna-in-Package (AiP) modules, the faster mmWave 5G iPhone models will launch a couple of months later.
