At present, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile communication technology, and it has entered the critical stage of standards and R&D in the world. However, there are currently no standards for 5G technology, and global R&D is also moving in many different directions. In the foreseeable two or three years, smartphones are about to usher in a new wave of sales growth. Driving this trend is not a breakthrough in some kind of appearance breakthrough, or a change in interactive technology, but the innovation of communication network.
How Fast is 5G?
5G has the characteristics of high transmission rate, large network capacity and short delay. With 5G, there will be a fiber-like access rate and the network energy efficiency will be improved by more than 100 times. 5G can not only greatly enhance the high-bandwidth business experience of mobile Internet users, but also meet the needs of massive network connection and wide coverage, and accelerate the development of digitalization and intelligence.
When Will 5G iPhones and Android Phones Come Out?
At the Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit held in October, Qualcomm has announced the first batch of OEM mobile phone manufacturers to use the Snapdragon X50 5G baseband in 2019, including OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, etc. About 20 mobile phone manufacturers will start launching 5G mobile phones in 2019. For example, Xiaomi said that in the first quarter of 2019, the Xiaomi MIX3 mobile phone supporting 5G network will be launched in the European market.
On November 2nd, the news from FastCompany insiderS saying that Apple’s first 5G version of the iPhone will be available in 2020, and it will use the 5G baseband produced by Intel. In contrast, Apple’s publishing time is relatively late, which is largely related to the affair with Qualcomm.
Does 5G Cost More?
Intel has organized a team to develop a 5G baseband for the new iPhone, but the larger data volume is also putting pressure on the baseband chip and RF, which makes the temperature of 5G iPhone prototype with XMM 8060 baseband not well controlled and indirectly affects battery life. This obviously can’t meet the needs of Apple, and it means that Apple has to wait for a longer period of time to run.
Of course, another teammate of Apple, FastCompany also mentioned the cooperation with MediaTek. At present, MediaTek has planned to launch the first 5G baseband chip M70 in the first half of 2019, and the first integrated 5G SoC chip will be launched by the end of the year. However, the probability of implementing this program is very low. After all, MediaTek’s baseband performance is far behind that of Qualcomm and Intel’s similar products, and it is still used in low-end products.
Does 5G cost more? Lenovo has released the Moto Z3, which uses a separate external module to support the 5G millimeter wave network. The reason for this design may be to balance the excessive power consumption of the 5G network. If we want to use the 5G high-speed network for the first time, we must insert more antennas and batteries at the expense of the size for the time being.
