The latest addition to the company’s A-series lineup, the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is a very interesting and value-for-money phone in 2023. It’s an around $200 Android 13 smartphone with a big screen, 5G support, a fresh design, and a decent camera spec., which serves as an ideal for home users.
While the Galaxy A14 has enough competition to make it a modern affordable smartphone, it couldn’t have arrived at this price without some compromises itself. Some of these shortcomings would be like: the panel is a 720p LCD, and storage is capped at 64GB. However, the lower price tag might come with a question that interests you: Is the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G waterproof?
Samsung has made great strides in this area though. But unfortunately, the answer is no, the Galaxy A14 5G is not waterproof. The reality would be a bit complicated.
Like the Galaxy A13 before it, the Galaxy A14 5G doesn’t have an IP rating, which means it’s not certified for water resistance, or even any water resistance certification. That’s in stark contrast to the company’s flagship S-series phones, nearly all of which have an IP68 rating to withstand prolonged immersion while being completely dust-proof. Even the Galaxy A53 5G got an IP67 rating. Samsung’s fold-able phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, in fact got an IPX8 rating, meaning they might be water-resistant to some extend but not tested against dust.
The lack of an IP rating just means that Samsung hasn’t tested and certified it yet. Ingress Protection (IP) testing costs money, so avoiding the testing can be an easy way to save development costs. Contact with small amounts of water is unlikely to cause any harm, but don’t expect it to be submerged in water. In either case, though, you do get it wet at your own risk—there’s no guarantee it’ll survive water or even dust, and the built-in 3.5mm headphone jack still allows water to get inside.
The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, a phone made entirely of plastic, shows no signs of being any more durable than Samsung’s slightly more expensive Galaxy A23 5G. However, the screen has a protective film and an oleophobic coating that protects it from minor scratches and fingerprints. Additionally, you’ll need to provide your own screen protector. Or plan to get a case, as there’s no indication that the Galaxy A14 5G offers any drop protection, and if you’re worried about taking your smartphone into the wild, you can opt for a waterproof case.
