Do you need a cellular Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 8, and the Apple Watch Ultra have just been released this year. You might have decided to get one right away, and you might have taken all the factors into consideration, ranging from different case materials, colors, sizes, and more. However, one most important thing comes at last: do you need an Apple Watch with cellular connectivity? The cellular version brings you a lot of features, but that comes at a cost.

The major difference between GPS and Cellular Apple Watch is based on their connectivity. With a cellular model, you can make calls, send texts, and so much more — all without your iPhone. This is great for those who have the habit of leaving their iPhone behind in favor of an Apple Watch, especially for those who run or take walks without a bulky iPhone.

In addition, you can use an Apple Watch cellular model complete a call to emergency services when you’re traveling abroad just by pressing and holding the side button. If your watch doesn’t have cellular, your iPhone needs to be nearby. If your iPhone isn’t nearby, it needs to be connected to a Wi-Fi network and you must set up Wi-Fi calling.

Another advantage of cellular Apple Watch is it allows you to use Family Setup, a new feature on the WatchOS 7. With this feature, you can set up a cellular Apple Watch for your child on your personal iPhone. Your iPhone doesn’t need to be nearby while the child can still use the Apple Watch to call, text, or use any other available feature.

With all these benefits, a cellular Apple Watch charges you extra roughly between $50 – $100 more. For example, The Apple Watch SE starts at $249 with GPS connectivity and $299 with GPS and cellular. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 starts at $399 for GPS and $499 for cellular and GPS.
