iPhone screens seem to crack more than any other smartphone on the market, but Apple completely changed that this time. The new iPhone 12 line-up all comes with a ceramic-hardened display called Ceramic Shield, which is four times greater resistant to damage from drops.
The Ceramic Shield is the latest glass-ceramic made by Corning. It went through a high-temperature crystallization process that allows nano-ceramic to form in the glass, enabling the display much tougher, and more impervious to heat and electricity than ever. Besides, because the new material is totally color-free glass-ceramic, you won’t notice any difference when comparing it with other Corning Glass.
The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini have an aluminum frame, while the other two models both have a stainless steel frame, making the phone more durable than previous ones. As for the IP rating, official specs show that all four new iPhones have an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating, but they can survive up to 6 meters underwater for 30 minutes, even longer than 4 meters for 30 minutes of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
All that said, it is necessary to learn that the Ceramic Shield is only applied to the display. If you accidentally drop your phone, the front side is more likely to stay safe but the back of the phone may get scratches or cracks. With an IP68 rating, you still would better protect the iPhone 12 and keep it away from any dangers as possible as you can.
