The new MacBook Pro 16-inch has launched for 2 months and Apple has addressed many customer concerns. The 2019 Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch features a new keyboard moving away from butterfly switches (MacBook Pro 15, MacBook Pro 13, MacBook Air) back to a traditional scissor switch keyboard. The bigger size means bigger power, the new 16” MacBook Pro features a built-in 100Wh Lithium-Polymer battery. How long to fully charge it?
The power adapter in the box is a 96W USB-C adapter, Apple says the 16-inch MacBook Pro uses the “most advanced thermal architecture ever in a Mac notebook” to enable the system to run at higher power for sustained periods of time. Thus the charging time is equal to 100Wh / 96W / 70% = 1.5 hours if you charge the new MacBook Pro 16-inch from completely flat to full. But if you are charging it while using it, the time will be longer accordingly.
Can you use an old 61W power adapter to charge new MacBook Pro 16-inch? Yes, it’s free for you to use a lower wattage charger to charge a machine which needs a higher wattage level, but it will either charge very slowly or not at all if you are heavily using it. On the other hand, you can use a higher wattage charger without any problems on a machine that doesn’t need it. It won’t charge faster though, so you can apply the 96W USB-C adapter to virtually any USB-C device.
How fast can I use MacBook Pro 16-inch to charger other devices? For instance, my Airpods Pro. The new MBP has 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports with support for charging, it delivers a maximum of 100W power to any connected device. Therefore, theoretically the new MacBook Pro 16-inch is able to charge most devices at full speed when you use the matched charging cord.
What about the battery life? MacBooks have always had impressive battery life, while you could almost forgive the MacBook Pro 16-inch for having a shorter battery life due to its larger screen and more powerful components. It provides up to 11 hours wireless web surfing and 11 hours Apple TV app movie playback, in fact it makes the battery life longer with a looped 1080p video at 50% screen brightness, lasting 11 hours and 41 minutes, which is a big step ahead over its predecessors. However, the battery performance depends on how many tasks on the backgound you are running, generally speaking the 16-inch model could just about get you through a work day without needing a charger.
