With the tagline, “By innovation only” on the event to launch the new iPhone 11 Pro, Apple didn’t offer us much surprise yesterday. To sum up, the biggest change, compared to the last generation, is about their cameras.
All iPhone models gain an extra camera, which is called the “Ultra wide”. It’s a 12-megapixel camera with a 120-degree field of view. It will help you take broader shots when there is no enough space for you to step back to farther distance. It’s great for taking landscape or architecture photos, tight shots and more. And a new Wide sensor with 100% Focus Pixels enables the mysteries Night mode, providing huge improvements to photos captured in indoor and outdoor low-light environments, resulting in brighter images with natural colors and reduced noise.
iPhone 11 series has such a great camera. Can we use it to replace our cameras, at least cameras for vlog shooting? There is a very important thing we should acknowledge in advance. Can iPhone 11/ 11 Pro/ 11 Pro Max take pictures underwater?
iPhone 11/ 11 Pro/ 11 Pro Max are IP68 water-resistant
Not like iPhone X, iPhone 11 series finally catch up with the trend, featured with IP68 waterproof rating. iPhone X series with an IP67 rating can survive in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, which means an accidental drop in water won’t damage the phone but taking it swimming is definitely infeasible. How about IP68?
Smartphones backed by an international standard rating of IP68 are deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt and sand, and are resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to 30 minutes. But we have to know that the rating assigned by the International Electrotechnical Commission is strictly for fresh water. If you put your iPhone 11 in other liquids, it doesn’t make any guarantee. And it is not recommended to swim with your phone or take photos with it in the swimming pool. The IEC tests the phone in lab with the handset in standby mode, not in a swimming pool full of various chemicals for cleansing the water. Let alone using it to take photos undersea. The salty water and water pressure will definitely ruin it.
Although IP68 is the highest water resistance level featured on smartphones, don’t use it underwater. Even GoPro HERO6 Black, which is waterproof down to 10m, still recommend using with a housing when under deep water.
