Q3: How to choose power bank for your phone/tablet?

How to choose power bank for your phone and tablet? Surely, it could be easy for you as you could just follow these tips below one by one; while it would be a little hard as you have to read and check the tips carefully, covering up to eight aspects in total, the size/capacity of power bank, power output, number of USB ports, cables included, power input, safety, quality and certification.

How to Choose Power Bank

Let’s start by choosing the size of your power bank.

This is not about which one will fit in your pocket or your purse. The size of the battery is about the power inside. Most power banks will feature a number on the front that tells you the number of mAh or “milliamp-hour”.

Common sizes range from 2,000mAh up to 10,000mAh or even 26,000mAh. Bigger numbers mean more power and more recharges for your smartphone, or charging for bigger devices that need more power, like a tablet.

We’ve used smartphones and tablets to compare battery sizes, but most power banks will charge any device that charges via USB, such as a GoPro camera, Kindle reader or Bluetooth headset. Bigger devices that draw more power will need bigger batteries – more mAh – to charge them fully.

How to Choose mAh for Power Bank

Then, we should consider POWER OUTPUT, a key point that’s to ensure fast charging for your phone/tablet.

Technically the standard USB port on your power bank will fit any standard USB cable. However, the amount of power it can provide may vary.

Question: How many times can a Power Bank 20,000mAh fully charge your phone?

Power Bank Charging Speed

Thirdly, it falls on NUMBER OF USB PORTS, a mattter of how many devices you need to charge.

Generally, bigger batteries with more mAh, sometimes have more than one USB port. If so, that can be useful to charge two smartphones at the same time – maybe to give a battery boost to a friend.

Or you can charge your smartphone and your GoPro at the same time.

Or your smartphone and your Bluetooth headset.

Or even a smartphone and a tablet, if you choose a battery with enough mAh to provide all that power.

With multiple ports, simultaneous charging is super-easy.

Fourth: your power bank will come with a cable.

A cable to charge the battery: YES

Every power bank should come with one cable (usually a standrad USB to Micro-USB cable) to charge the power bank itself, which you use to connect the power bank input port (usually Micro-USB) to a standard USB wall charger.

A cable to charge your phone/tablet: MAYBE

If your phone or tablet connects via Micro-USB, you can use the supplied cable to charge it.

If your phone or tablet connects via a Lightning or USB-C connector, you will need to use an additional cable to charge it. Some power banks come with multiple cables and you could check the packaging to see what’s included.

Some power banks provide cables that are detachable, which makes it easy to switch between cables for your iPad, your Samsung phone, your Kindle or another device.

Some have cables that’re hard-wired to the battery that they cannot be detached, making them easier to find in a low battery emergency, but may make them less versatile overall.

Some even have clever storage solution: a detachable cable you can switch out for other cable, plus a way to keep the cable close so it’s always close at hand.

Fifthly, it’s about charging the power bank itself.

Unfortunately, no power bank has been invented that magically recharges itself when it’s empty. But on the whole, they are pretty simple to charge: plug the supplied cable into the input port on the power bank and a standard USB on the other end into a wall charger or other power source.

Power Bank input ranges from 1Amp up to 3Amps(short for ampere and it’s a unit of current) or even higher with type-c input. Put simply, the bigger the input number, the faster it will recharge.

Some power banks have an LED indicator, which tells you how much power the power bank has left and on the other side will tell you when you need to recharge the battery.

How to Charge Up Power Bank 20000mAh

What’s more? Here’s something about how to choose a safe power bank.

It’s easy to avoid counterfeit and dangerous ones by following these simple steps:

Register Your Device   some power banks require you to register your purchase, by providing the serial number either online or via a helpline. This is a good way to activate your returns policy and to ensure your product is not a counterfeit.

Check the Warranty   manufacturer, country of origin and the type of battery may mean differences in the type or duration of the warranty. If you are unsure, check the small print on the package or the instructions provided.

Power Bank Recreational Life

Something else? Surely. The Importance of Quality.

Safe power banks should have undergone the following testing.

Efficiency   more efficient power bank is, a lower operating temperature it will have, which wastes less energy for a longer life expectancy.

Over Current Protection   it prevents too much power going into the battery pack and the power going out to the connected equipment, protecting the delicate circuitry of both devices.

Over Voltage Protection   it protects both the power bank and the connected device by keeping the voltage within recommended safety parameters to avoid damage.

Over Discharge/Charge Protection   some power banks consistently monitor charge states to prevent this from happening.

Heat Tests at Extreme Temperatures   While using batteries in extreme temperatures isn’t advised anywhere.

How to Choose Power Bank

Last but least, it’s CERTIFICATION.

These logos or marks, usually found on the packaging, will indicate that they have passed the necessary industry standard regulations, to comply with and achieve the following certifications.

Power Bank Certification for Safety

    1. Yes, the low cost power banks are made of cheap Li-ion or Li-Po batteries and unsafe protective circuits, even it claims to have high capacity, it’s more likely to be fake.

    1. Yes, why not? Just make sure your solar power bank is working properly and compatible with your phone.

    1. The charging current massively depends on the charger you use, so if your power bank only inputs 1A most likely you used a 1A charger to charge it

      2. Hiii . I have redme note 4..?? N I don’t know about d power bank it was gifted my someone…last year !!

      3. Hello Vibhuti, the Redmi note 4 requires 5V / 2A input power, so it’s Okay to use your power bank to charge your phone, the only thing you may concern it’s the recharge cycle as the capacity of Redmi Note 4 battery is pretty high, if your power bank is not monster enough I’m not sure it can meet the need.

      4. Hiii day s d only main concern actually it takes 2hrs maximum to charge from d charger I got WD d phone!! So I just want to ask dat I can use dat power bank in emergency ryt ??? It will not Damge my phone’s battery!!

  8. Which USB Port output(5V 1A or 5V 2.1A) from power bank, would you recommend charging moto e3 power that protects from decrements battery life.

    1. Hello I read about the article mentioned above related to power banks … I just want to ask, Which USB Port output(5V 1A or 5V 2.1A) from power bank, would you recommend charging moto e3 power that protects from decrements battery life.

    2. Hi Nara, I would recommend output of 5V 2.1A power bank, you see, your device will only draw the current it needs, no worries about it will damage your battery.

      1. Thanks, Shirley, it’s helpful. I would also like to ask another thing which I observed in power bank (Intex IT-PB 20K Poly). As I already told you, it has two ports with above output. I connected the motoe3 phone to port (5V 2.1A) output, I felt really surprised as it takes more minutes to cross each and every charging percent than the output port from (5V 1A). Above observation, I felt only after I have charged power bank fully. but it’s not the case when I tested power bank connecting output port (5V 2.1A) to moto e3 power after unboxing it with output power that comes without charging power bank, I felt charging percentage(20%) crosses within 6 mints. Am not sure what has gone wrong. Your guessing/suggestions are much welcome.

      3. Hi Narayanan, in your case it’s quite interesting, theoretically the output of each port should be stable only if your phone doesn’t require the amount of power the port can supply, I mean if the port provides 2.1A but actually the phone only needs 1A, but it’s not the case either because you mentioned the charging with 1A port is faster. I’m wondering whether the output of 2.1A port is really 2.1A… if you want to figure the things out, I suggest you to use a USB meter to measure the power passing through, hope it will help you.

  9. Hello I have infinix note 3 with 4500 mAh battery which power bank specs is suitable to use on it? Please very urgent.

    3. Suggest a durable company power bank with multiple ports

    1. Hi, first I need the name of your phones exactly to know the capacity of the batteries inside. Generally speaking, the overall battery capacity of 2 phones would not be larger than 10000 mAh, I suggest you to get a power bank with at least 10000 mAh to support 1 charge for 2 phones in a row. EasyAcc 10000 mAh slim power bank is a good choice.

  15. Thank you, this is the explanation I was looking forward to convince myself. Recently bought a one plus 5 and suffered during travel for want of power. How much mAh would the device need to keep my mind free of using it with fear of loosing out on power?

Hi Dem, as for the 2900mAh non-removable battery capacity of SONY Experia Z5, I suggest you to choose a power bank generating 6000mAh to 10000mAh for a daily use, literally it depends on how heavy you use your phone, if you are a quite heavy user, I recommend EasyAcc 10000mAh Ultra-Slim Power Bank, it’s ultra portable and supports quick charge of Sony Experia Z5.

  17. I am not looking to charge my device per se. I want my iPad mini to run continuously for at least 8 hrs at a trade show that does not provide AC power. So I need the power bank to act as an external power supply, which I assume is doable. If so, what mAh should I use?

  18. Is it possible to have a 60000mAh capacity power bank? I realized the capacities indicated in the briefing had a maximum of 20000mAh capacity ,

    1. Technically it’s possible to have a 60000mAh power bank as long as you can accept the huge size and high weight of it.

Any advice would be most welcome! Thankyou

    1. Hi Bernadette, for your concern, the battery capacity of Fire tablet is around 3000 mAh and considering the bluetooth headphones, I suggest you to take a power bank sporting at least 10000 mAh for current need and futureproof. Here’s my recommendation: EasyAcc 10000 Slim Portable Charger

  23. Hi!

  26. Am I right in assuming that when selecting / choosing a power bank. The output of the power bank should be at least double the battery power of your chosen device ?

    1. Hi Steve, I would say it depends on the power conversion rate of the power bank, if it’s a branded qualified one, the industry standard rules the rate could not be lower than 60%, our EasyAcc power banks generally could reach 70% to 90%, therefore, in order to meet the daily use requirements for about 1.5 cycles, double of your device battery capacity or higher is a good option

  27. Hello. What kind of power bank would you like to suggest me for my Moto X play cell phone ?
I want a light weight compact one ,easy to carry with me.
    Thank you.

  28. I have Galaxy Tab A (2017) SM-T385NZDA and mob Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro. Kindly suggest power bank including specifications .I am a moderate user. Do not travel. Thanks

    1. Galaxy C7 Pro features a non-removable 3300mAh battery and Galaxy Tab A 2017 features 5000 mAh respectively, in order to ensure more than a full charging cycle of both devices, I suggest a power bank capacity of around 15000mAh. I recommend MegaCharge Doubin 16750 mAh power bank. Double input Double output, easily recharge itself and fast charge 2 devices simultaneously.
