The main technique for audio zoom is called beamforming or spatial filtering. It allows changing the directionality of the recording, i.e. the sensitivity according to the direction of the sound source, and shaping it in any necessary way. The best directivity in this case is hypercardioid mode, which boosts sound from the direction your camera is pointing at while attenuating sound from all other directions, commonly known as background noise.
The starting point for this technology is that the omnidirectional microphones must be distributed as widely as possible, that is, the more microphones there are and the greater the distance, the greater the possibility. When a device is equipped with two microphones, they are usually located on the top and bottom to maximize the distance between them. The signals captured by the microphones are then optimally combined to produce a hypercardioid pattern.
Furthermore, there are currently no good technical solutions to simulate real wind noise in natural acoustic environments under laboratory conditions. Manufacturers therefore had to develop their own digital windshield technology based on the evaluation of the audio recordings, in order not to be limited by the industrial design of the product.
