In AVG’s latest quarterly Android App Performance Report, the online security company studied one million of its users to see which apps were the most resource-consuming (data, battery and storage) on their devices. In terms of ‘Overall Performance Impact’ on your phone, the top (or worst) five were as follows:

• Facebook
• Spotify
• Instagram
• Path
• Amazon Android

Of course, it’s not necessarily the apps in themselves that are the problem, but the amount of time that people spend on them (think you spend too much time on Facebook? An app has recently come out that helps you monitor your smartphone habits). 

 

If you can’t resist the inflammatory, in-your-face headlines of the Daily Mail Online, then that might explain why you keep going over your data allowance. Here are the five worst apps for data usage:

• Tumblr
• Facebook
• Instagram
• Spotify

Samsung owners, brace yourselves for a shock, because the Beaming Service and Security Policy Updates apps – service that run in the background on Samsung phones – are the two biggest battery drains on your devices.

• Facebook
• Waze Social GPS Maps & Traffic
• Vault-Hide SMS Pics & Videos

The report shows that the performance impact of games on phones dropped from 62 percent in Q3 2014, to 49 percent in Q4 2014, but there are still some big hitters among them. Here are the five games that used up most phone resources last quarter:

• Hay Day
• LINE Let’s Get Rich
• Boom Beach
• Candy Crush Saga
• Farm Heroes Saga

So the lessons to be learned from this report? Root your Samsung phone to get rid of its bloatware, watch your Facebook habit, and don’t spend too much time in the fictional farmscape of Hay Day.
