Months before Pixel 6 was released, rumors had that it would feature both the fingerprint sensor and face unlock. However, with the phone here now, you’ll find that face unlock doesn’t show up in the list. You have to use the optical in-display fingerprint scanner to unlock your Pixel 6.

Actually, this is the first time that Google has included the in-display scanner in its Pixel line. For almost every previous model, the company stuck with a standard fingerprint sensor on the back. As for face unlock, only Pixel 4 has ever featured it, which was widely regarded as the best one on an Android phone. Though Pixel 6 has no special hardware or any sensors to support face unlock except for a front-facing camera, it’s worth expecting that Google could reintroduce this feature with a regular Pixel Feature Drop update in the future.
There’re problems with the new in-display fingerprint sensor, unfortunately, according to some feedback from the early users. The biggest issue is that the Pixel 6 is slow in phone unlocking once you touch the scanner section. It’s not a big deal for some, but just a second of delay means a lot for those who need to frequently open their phone. The other problem is that the phone doesn’t respond every time. And the scanner may need a firmer, more direct press of a finger than other phones.

Here’re some easy solutions to speed up the fingerprint sensor on your Pixel 6:
- Set up your fingerprint again: The Pixel 6 has an optical fingerprint sensor, which works by taking a visual image of your fingerprint and then matching it with the files stored. So, when you reset your fingerprint, register the same finger for several times to create a better profile for reference when you put you finger press the scanner.
- Increase touch sensibility: Brands like Samsung and Google all offer the option to increase screen sensibility which can improve the speed of the fingerprint scanner as well. Go to Settings>>Display>>Other display settings, and then turn on Increase touch sensitivity.
